rydra_wong: Lisa Rands' chalky hands on the sloper on the route Gaia (climbing -- hands)

The Friday post of glee is where you get to tell us about your climbing-related happiness this week.

It can be a new achievement or adventure, or just that you climbed and had fun; it can be that your favourite climbing wall is expanding or that you bought new rock shoes or that you found a cool ice-climbing vid on YouTube. No glee is too small -- or too big. Members are encouraged to cheer each other on and share the squee.

N.B. Please feel free to post your glee on any day of the week; the Friday glee is just to get the ball rolling.

To enhance this week's glee: 18 minutes of unsung hero Charlie Woodburn* on "Do You Know Where Your Children Are?", E8 6c on the Pembroke sea cliffs (and I found this before UKclimbing.com did, dammit).

{*Charlie Woodburn created Harder Faster, the direct finish to the already-terrifying Gaia. Neil Gresham wrote that, after trying it on top-rope, "we came away with the feeling that a friend of ours had done something really, really bad. As the relatives always say with hindsight, 'If only we'd realized, we have tried to talk him out of it, or at least called the police.'"}

I have glee because I went climbing for the first time in a fortnight yesterday, and despite that and a stinking cold I managed to climb plausibly well :-)

The other day I went bouldering at the climbing center for the first time in two weeks. I'd been outdoor buildering here and there but it just isn't the same. I had only a two hour window and I used it to totally trash myself. It felt great. I'd planned to climb until I fell off the wall, but I stopped just before I got to that stage, when the skin on my hands started to feel like I'd been rubbing sandpaper all over it.

Also, there were all kinds of interesting bouldering routes with the perfect degree of difficulty... not so easy you'd manage on first go, but doable with a bit of trying.

If everything goes well, I'll go toproping this weekend, too. *fingers crossed*
