rydra_wong: Lisa Rands' chalky hands on the sloper on the route Gaia (climbing -- hands)

The Friday post of glee is where you get to tell us about your climbing-related happiness this week.

It can be a new achievement or adventure, or just that you climbed and had fun; it can be that your favourite climbing wall is expanding or that you bought new rock shoes or that you found a cool ice-climbing vid on YouTube. No glee is too small -- or too big. Members are encouraged to cheer each other on and share the squee.

N.B. Please feel free to post your glee on any day of the week; the Friday glee is just to get the ball rolling.

To enhance this week's glee: Jude Spancken on 'Pretty Girls Make Graves' and onsighting 'Lord of the Flies' (trad climbing in Wales).

I climbed! Not very well, but I climbed, and I spent a lot of time staring at the walls. And I belayed a friend.

I've spent a lot of time staring at walls myself. I think sometimes I'm waiting for them to tell me how to get up them, but they don't reveal their secrets easily! (grin)

I found this vid I enjoyed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyriIYhifec

My favorite part starts at 3:30, climbing on some tower in Vienna... pretty spectacular, it looks like so much fun!

(Not quite as spectacular: I just climbed a tree to pick pears. :)

I am publishing an article about math anxiety and climbing! It will be in Math Horizons, which is a magazine for math majors.

It's more or less "How I used what I know about math anxiety to get myself up a wall". I'll post it on my professional webpage once it gets published, maybe in six months or so?

My glee this week is that my regular climbing partner is back, and we're climbing two to three times a week together!

My glee this week is that I got new shoes for my birthday and I got to try them.
They're my first technical shoes - meaning that for the first time I have to take them off when I'm not climbing - but they don't hurt that much when I'm climbing, which I was slightly afraid off.

I got Tenaya Ra.
And since I pretty much just trusted the guy at the shop, searching for a link for you has shown me that they are indeed the kind of shoes I wanted. :-)

I went climbing two days in a row, which did interesting things to my arms. But then it was a mild revelation that the day after that, they...weren't sore, despite how much they'd hurt by about twenty minutes into the second day of climbing. So it feels like I may be improving in stamina/resilience, which is a nice thing to think about when I'm being terrorized by the Killer Wall yet again.

I've been away with no chances to climb, so no glee from me. Lord of the Flies is the first climbing route I knew the name of, back when I was a kid and did a week's climbing course in Wales. I watched (from a rather easier route!) someone working up that blank wall of rock, and it's an image that's always stuck with me, even though I suspect I'll never be good enough to climb E6 6a. Awesome climbing.
