This is an amazing post! ...and it's reminding me that I really ought to go find some sort of introductory manual--or, heck, pamphlet--for climbing, because some months in and bravely working my way towards V1s, I still don't know what most of the terminology is.

I'm actually trying to go on a guided outdoor climbing trip that my gym's running in a few weeks, but that one's top-rope. About the same sort of advice? Any fiendish peculiarities for that approach in particular?
