Prusik loop v. sling?

Discuss.

I have not much of an opinion, but this came up in conversation with friends - advantages over one or the other, and if you had to carry only one, which would it be and why?

Different tools for different jobs, I think - I use prusiks when abseiling (in theory, I have 2 so I could try and ascend a rope with them, but I've not ever done so in anger), and I use a prusik loop to pack my gear away on. Slings get used for extending gear, threads, building belays, attaching to ground anchors. On a trad climb I'd carry both.

Seconding this. I feel like I may be missing some context for the original question, because I'd usually carry both (and they're so light it's not like you're having to make any trade-offs -- I have my chalkbag on accessory cord so I can always make a prusik out of that anyway).

If I had to pick one, for the sake of discussion, I'd go for a sling made of a material which would also work well if I had to use it as a prusik.

The other way round wouldn't be as useful, since generic prusik loops are accessory cord which has much lower breaking strain than a proper sling. So I'd be much happier using a sling as a prusik loop than a prusik loop as a sling!

The prusik v. sling was one of those silly hypothetical conversations you get into, of, well, you can kind of do X with this other tool, so if you were to forget one or only be able to carry one which would it be? What annoyances would you rather deal with in using something that's not quite right for the task, all because you have chosen that as the only thing you'd have at hand?

Ah, right, I get it. Were there other "if you could only pick one ..." hypotheticals you discussed?
